The development of my work will evolve around the stories of the 'City of Salford'. As everyday passes a story of Salford is lost I want to record these stories, some of which have been past on through generations. When I was young I would sit for hours listening to my Great-Auntie Jone as she told me all sorts of stories of wartime Salford. I want to rekindle lost stories and capture them so that they can be heard about for many more years.
Context/Rationale:
I would like my work to build upon my love of local history and my love for print and digital design. To start I would like to collect stuff that interests me and keep a broad mind to what I come across both printed, digital media and through word of mouth. I will record this by using a recording device, camera and a note pad and pen. I want to explore Salford and discover the truth behind areas in the stories, impartially the area of where I come from Weaste. I also like the idea of exploring conversations and combining them to create a new story? Relating objects to stories also interests me because ‘ever object has the potential to tell a story’. For example an engraved pocket watch, which was given to a person for so many years of service in the ‘Salford Fire Brigade’.
Key Areas of Research:
I want to know how these stories came about and what lies beneath the stories and if they can be explored and developed… Will I find out new knowledge? Or maybe knowledge that has been previously lost? Discovering and learning is what that excites me about this journey.
Intended Outcomes of Projects:
Being of a fine art and digital graphics background I would like to use this to my strength and produce an outcome within these areas. I have a strong view that the outcome should involve an aspect of social media and to be modern in times– ‘Bringing stories up to date using technology’. I want my outcome to connect with younger people as if they were in my shoes all them years ago listening to my Great-Aunty Jone tell her stories.

Explanation/Outline of Project:
The development of my work will evolve around the stories and interviews of the people from Salford. I want to record, collect and present these stories so they connect and interact with younger audiences and in the process learn and discover ‘wartime – to present Salford’
“A celebration of childhood memories”
Context/Rationale:
I have narrowed my search for stories in the ‘Weaste, Langworthy, Seedley and Salford Quays’ area. Which I believe is the ‘Heart of Salford’. Talking to people it’s a great to hear different versions of ‘their Salford’.
Key Areas of Research:
Interview Salford people collect their stories:
- Ask for something to put in the book e.g. a photograph, an object of typography.
- Reproduce objects to look like an original.
- Type up the interviews/stories in a word/InDesign document.
- Use an old typewriter font.
- Phone directory for the content page of an album.
- Map of the area of people I have spoken to.
Intended Outcomes of Projects:
To produce a ‘Photograph Album’ style book that contains people’s stories and interviews. It will be an interactive album containing images/paper objects you can pull out of the album and interact with.
Add a digital element to the book by including a short recording so the audience can hear the voice of the storyteller.
‘Bringing stories up to date using technology’.
