Explanation/Outline of Project:
‘Salford Firsts’ is a project born from the research I have collected about Salford rich history. The aim of my project is to create a design solution that will connect with the local people of Salford and make them aware of Salford’s heritage.

Context/Rationale:
A steamboat, a public park and the steam hammer… it is an unusual collection. But what do they all have in common? Well the answer is that these are just a handful of national and international ‘firsts’ that were initially founded in Salford.

Discovering the facts it came apparent that I should focus on one part of the city with the majority of firsts in the narrative of that area. With this in mind I choose to centre my project on the Bridgewater Canal along the Worsley to Barton section. The Bridgewater Canal contains a wealth of heritage so I found it important to walk the length of the canal from Worsley to Barton and record what I see.

Using the theme of firsts to make links and connections a certain section of the canal stood out, the Barton Bridges. This section of the Bridgewater canal dates back to 1761 when James Brindley who was a pioneer of that century built the first raised aqueduct. However this was replaced in 1893 when the world’s first ‘Swing Bridge and Aqueduct’ was built at Barton.

Key Areas of Research:
My project is focus on two areas; uncovering the hidden past and sharing this new found knowledge in a visual way.

The Bridges at Barton will be the foundation for my project and from this I will start to develop a range of ideas and design solutions for each fact I have uncovered which will tell the stories/first of the Barton Bridges.

Finding inspiration for my own design solutions will come from my own collection of research and from looking at what other people have produces for example the ‘City Brand’ project at Uclan.

Intended Outcomes of Projects:
How best to present the ‘Salford Firsts’, coming from a digital design background I would like to incorporate my digital awareness and skills into the final outcome. Interviewing people earlier on in the development of my project has highlighted to me the importance of being able to share, engage and interact with the audience. Which could be done purely as a digital outcome like creating a website compatible for a mobile phone or through another method communication like public art. An example of this could be creating a piece or a series of sculptures/plates that would mark the location of the ‘First’ facts. This could also acts as markers for an interactive trail, which would allow me to engage with public art and digital graphics.

Explanation/Outline of Project:
Aims: To create a design solution that will uncover the hidden past and tell the story of the Barton Bridges which is a section of the Bridgewater and Manchester Ship Canal.

Context/Rationale:
A steamboat, a public park and the steam hammer… it is an unusual collection. But what do they all have in common? Well the answer is that these are just a handful of national and international ‘firsts’ that were initially founded in Salford.

Using the theme of firsts to make links and connections a certain section of the canal stood out, Barton Bridges, which is made up of the Barton Swing Aqueduct of The Bridgewater Canal and the Barton Swing Bridge, Manchester Ship Canal. This section of the Bridgewater canal dates back to 1761 when James Brindley who was a pioneer of that century built the first raised aqueduct. However this was replaced in 1893 when the world’s first ‘Swing Bridge and Aqueduct’ was built at Barton.

My overall aims and objectives are to create a piece of art that allows the public to engage and interact with as it tells the story of Salford Heritage. By looking at how the environment interacts with the area through street furniture and the space surrounding the location I would like to product public art that trails along the site by either giving current boring objects a new purpose for example the railings.

Key Areas of Research:
The Bridges at Barton are the foundation for my project and from this I am developing a range of ideas and design solutions for each narrative I have uncovered which will tell the stories/first of the Barton Bridges.

How can each fact be communicated into a visual/sound solution?

1)    How to tell a story - Boats that crossed the Bridges what are the Names of barges/ships, contents, exports to and from countries for example the Manchester ship sent to war - Stripped of their identity painted in grey.

2)    Looking at the perceptive of the Barton Bridges when open and closed (90 Degrees swing) can hidden art seen when the bridge is open. Can shadow art be seen at certain times of the day when the sun is high, can shadows be reflecting on water for example typography readable on water also what patterns do they make from the different boats (ghost ships), Bridges. Can the patterns form the industrial revolution be used designers of the time: William Morris.

3)    Interactive sounds insulation that will capture sound in the environment through the use of wind for example. Which captures noises of the area: Horse shoes, men at work, boat horns, cobbles stones also old songs/poems about the Manchester Ship Canal like 'The Big Ship Sailed Down The Ally Ally Oh' and 'Dirty Old Town'.

Finding inspiration for my own design solutions will come from my own collection of research and from looking at what other people have produces for example the ‘City Brand’ project at Uclan.

Intended Outcomes of Projects:
Looking at my research and narrative I want to find a way that will allow me to engage with public art with a digital solution. Interviewing people earlier on in the development of my project has highlighted to me the importance of being able to share, engage and interact with the audience. Which could be done purely as a digital outcome like creating a website compatible for a mobile phone or through another method communication like public art.
1)    Environment Solutions and Ideas:

-> Ship headstones carved in stone or rail sleepers
-> Light insulation: Ships sailing in the mist down the canal - beam of light
-> Sound insulation: Wind - twisted metal, tubes
-> Railing: Sound Bars (*Different pitches of ship horns)
-> Benches: Shaped as boats (*Peeling Back history, CityBrand)
-> Bridge Tower: Painting in the Manchester Ship Canal colours (*Red and Black)
-> Promotional Material: Carrier Bags, Handkerchiefs (*Manchester Ship Canal)

2)    How to connect research with a design solution (links and connections):
Industrial Revolutionist Jacquard Vaucanson invented the ‘Jacquard Loom’ which used hole punched-card to create weaved cloth on the mechanism loom. <- CONNECITON -> Hand Winding mechanism music: Method of a revolving cylinder with raised pins hitting certain notes on a piece of metal of different pitches creating different tones when it is being winded.
